Ingredients:
- 1 cup white sabut urad dal
- 1 onion chopped
- 1 tomato cubed
- 1 tsp grated ginger
- 1 chopped green chilli
- Some chopped coriander leaves
- 1 tsp jeera whole
- 2 cloves
- Two bay leaves
- 2 tsps lemon juice
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- ½ tsp chilli powder
- ¼ tsp garam masala
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsps oil
Method:
- Soak the dal for half an hour and wash
- Boil the dal till soft but not pasty
- Drain the dal and keep aside
- In a pan add oil and heat
- Add bay leaves, cloves and jeera and allow to splutter
- Add ginger, onion and green chilli and sauté
- Add tomatoes and cook till soft
- Now add the dry spices and cook for a minute
- Add the dal and the lemon juice and stir gently till the spices are well blended
- Pour into a serving dish and garnish with coriander leaves.
- Serve hot with chapattis
Urad dal can also be used to make chutneys, cutlets, dosas, vadas, idlis, papads, kachoris and various other dishes.
